For the Thumamah Road West corridor the ADA required a unique character. We were invited to develop the landscape design. For the design philosophy, we were contemplating using the road and the elements as an urban art object. Instead of “art and an intervention”, we used landscape design as an intervention on road elements, such as New Jersey Barriers, Gantry Signs etc, underlining the importance of landscape in the urban environment. We based our theme on a hexagonal cell structure as building blocks for plants and developed a pattern that gave a unifying character to the corridor. The cloverleaf interchange is a prominent location inside the Wadi, situated on the junction of the Airport Road. All traffic from the north and the airport passes through this interchange. The flyover offers elevated views over the area. We developed the area as a land art sculpture, portraying a desert or Wadi in bloom. Oversized (2.5m high) sculptural flowers create a field of blossoms in groupings of different colours. The surface was made up from a hexagonal pattern of natural gravel surface, decorative gravel, artificial lawn and ground covers.
