The Riyadh Municipality were asking for an urban concept for the development of Wadi Al Sulay. This extensive natural drainage network, traverses through several existing residential areas of Riyadh as seen on the layout drawing. We assisted the urban planners, Design Plus, with the landscape design. We developed proposals on how public parks could be integrated inside the existing residential areas by creating a green belt of public open spaces or parks. Due to restricted water availability, areas were divided into intensive green or arid zones. The intensive green areas included runoff channels and catchment basins developed as landscape features. These were to function with or without standing water. The arid zones were sparsely planted with selected desert plants requiring little water. All zones were developed offering various user facilities required in public open parks, such as walkways, seating areas, picnic areas, furniture, sport or play equipment.
