With the introduction of the Metro, the ADA developed the first part of the King Abdullah Corridor. Road intersections were altered to become underpasses and a tunnel section constructed below King Fahd and Olaya Roads. The original road and urban concept made provision for the tunnel deck to be a large continuous space. In order to maximise the identity of this space, we turned the whole landscape into a single urban city square or plaza, where priority was given to pedestrians over traffic. We gave the full corridor width between buildings a plaza character. LRT stops were further highlighted with a concentric circular pattern inside open square spaces with sparser tree planting. The LRT line ran in the centre of the tunnel deck.
